Christine Wolfe was fortunate to have learned from French cavalry officers who had served in the North African non-mechanized cavalry. My instructors were not world famous but their riding heritage was solidly grounded by their need to be good horsemen in order to stay alive. I also had instructors who studied at the Ecole Militaire de Paris, an equestrian school created in 1751 by Louis XV.
My gods of equitation include Francois Robichon de la Gueriniere (1688-1751), father of classical French equitation; Colonel Alois Podhajski (1898-1973), former director of the Spanish Riding School in Vienna; Janou Lefebvre-Tissot (1945-), who represented France in the 1964, 1968 and 1972 Olympics; and ex-jockey Andre Sagaud, now-unknown trainer of Nelson Pessoa of Brazil.
From 1991 to the end of 2012, I owned Tschuess, an energetic purebred Trakehner mare around whom life revolved. I applied what I learned about horse care at British Horse Society accredited Suzanne's Riding School (founded by Suzanne Marzak) in the United Kingdom in 1978 & 1979 to her care.
There are still horses in my life: Aging Clyde was replaced by a nine-year-old Western-trained Morgan Rocky, who has now gone on to a stable where he'll do just trail rides. I now ride Dancer, a Welsh Pony/TB cross who is known for doing things according to her own lights. She is "sur l'oeil", a French term best translated as "overly sensitive to visual stimuli"! I ride her until she relaxes which she quite loves. She is kind underneath the willfulness and takes good care of me! Pictures of all three are in the Gallery.
